Balance-only sharing

Balance-only sharing is a middle setting between sharing an account in full and keeping it private: the other partner sees that the account exists and what its balance is, but not its transactions or holdings.

What is balance-only sharing?

A balance answers one question: how much is there, or how much is owed. Transactions answer others: where the money went, when, and to whom. Balance-only sharing separates the two, so a partner can see the size of a retirement account or a card balance without the line items behind it.

It is distinct from a joint account, and from a private account, which the other partner does not see. The account stays in one person's name either way.

In an investment account the detail is the holdings: the positions that add up to the balance. Shared as a balance only, the partner sees the total and not the positions.

How balance-only sharing works, with numbers

Sam's IRA holds $60,000 across three funds, and Sam shares it as a balance only. Over a month Sam contributes $500 and the funds gain $700.

Alex sees the balance go from $60,000 to $61,200. The IRA's transactions and holdings aren't part of what Alex sees.

Why balance-only sharing matters

Both partners see how large the account is. The transactions and trades behind it stay with the owner.

A balance still carries some information: the change between two readings is visible, as the $1,200 in the example is, while the account's transactions and holdings are not.

Balance-only sharing in Taiga Finance

In Taiga Finance “Balance only” is one of three choices on an account's “Sharing” row, described in the picker as “The other member is shown the balance, not transactions”. On the Accounts page and in the account's drawer, the partner then sees the account, with its balance and its balance history. Its transactions, holdings, notes and credit limit stay with the owner there.

Only its owner can rename it or change its Sharing. An account counted in net worth is in the household total whatever its Sharing setting.
